Scale Day v22.0

Thanksgiving has come and gone.  I may have had a wonderful week with family, but it was busy and stressful too.  Last week I didn’t make a new goal, although I didn’t plan to go completely without my daily goals.  I did plan on eating a full Thanksgiving Dinner and to have pie for desert, which I did.  I also planned to continue to workout everyday, which I didn’t.  I do believe I made good food choices all week-long (except yesterday), even my Thanksgiving dinner wasn’t proportioned crazy, 1/2 my plate was veggies!!  I kept to my water goal all week except for the last 2-days and the news gets worse from there.  Wednesday was our travel day and I was crazy busy with work and packing…I didn’t exercise.  Saturday and Sunday were busy with family activities and I didn’t exercise.  The week ended with only 4 workouts for 190 minutes of exercise, pathetic when I consider my goal is 400.  I haven’t had a week this low in minutes since before the 4th of July!!

Considering how disappointed I was with my efforts this week I had a terrible time getting up this morning for scale day.  I finally was able to get to it when I remembered as soon as I knew what the scale had to say I could move forward.  Last week I weighed in at 140.8, I was really hoping to still see that zero and I did, in fact I weight 140.4.  I have no idea how I lost .4 pounds!!!

Alright then, Thanksgiving week is done, time to look forward!!!  I only have 3 more scale days until Christmas weekend, wait, WHAT!!  Yes, only 3 more weeks, or should I say 3 more pounds.  I can do this.  I will get back to all my goals: enough sleep, water, hunger scale, food choices, DAILY exercise AND stretching.

Yesterday Dacia brought this wonderful idea to my attention: the ladies over at the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans posted some brilliance: O, Fitness – 25 Days of Exercise.  There is a printable Christmas tree and everything.  The idea is simple, exercise everyday from December 1st through to December 25th.  Everyday you exercise you can put a sticker on the printout, love this idea!!  Just what I needed to get back on track with daily exercise with the joy of stickers on top.

Here’s hoping we all have a fun, productive, non-stressful December, it starts tomorrow!!!

Random Thoughts Monday v12.0

I had a crazy relaxing fun busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  We finally got home yesterday around 6pm and although I miss my family already, it is GOOD to be home!!  I have lots of random thoughts today so here you go…

  • Will future generations think we are weird for sometimes liking things printed out?  Will they not know the joy of a printed catalog? Not sure what got me thinking along this line, but I know I read more on-line than ever before.  My parents and in-laws still prefer to print what they read.  My mother-in-law, a huge reader can not get behind any ebook reader.  Paperless has been a big thing for a while now.  I guess I just started thinking of the generations still to come, not quiet Terra Nova, but like my grandkids (b/c my boys will have kids :), they are going to think I’m weird and not just for the paper thing, oh my, love it
  • Have you heard of sites like Spotify?  Here is their blurb: Think of Spotify as your new music collection. Your library. Only this time your collection is vast: millions of tracks and counting. Spotify comes in all shapes and sizes, available for your PC, Mac, home audio system and mobile phone. Wherever you go, your music follows you.  And because the music plays live, there’s no need to wait for downloads and no big dent in your hard drive.  Are sites like these, which also have an iPhone app, going to make the iPod and buying music obsolete?  I’m a little worried about musicians, but ASCAP (the organization that bills radio, movies, tv and internet for use of licensed music and pays the musician) better be on top of this one!
  • Since I just had a travel weekend with my kids, which included the portable DVD player and a travel case full of DVDs, I started wondering when it will be easy and mainstream to load movies onto an iPod type unit that can plug into the DVD player?  DVD’s can be about 4 GB when loaded on your computer and Blu-ray about 50GB, so with a collection of lets say 50, that would be like carrying around an external hard drive, no thanks.  Ok so someone should start re-purposing those outdated iPods and make them into traveling movie pods…the iMod 🙂
  • I traveled about 3 hours away from home for the Thanksgiving holiday.   Well the trip normally takes 3 hours, it took 5 hours on Wednesday afternoon and 4 hours yesterday afternoon.  How wonderful that so many travelled to see their family for the holiday.  How sad that so many had to travel so far to see their family.
  • My Lions: I still love you!!

That’s it for this week, now back to your regular schedule and oh boy cyber Monday, happy shopping everyone

Scale Day v21.0

Recovering from my Nia White Belt Training has been a work in progress.  I do best on 7.5 hours of sleep, so less than 6 hours for 7 days was one thing, but all that activity and the emotional journey is another.  My first day off from the training I did not work out at all, totally understandable, I think.  Sunday I got right back on track and re-started my morning workouts.  Although I am making a guess for how many minutes of exercise I got during my Training days, I believe I got in 490 minutes in the past week, not bad considering a missed one day entirely.  My body has been struggling a bit to get back into my patterns, working out in the am, was probably the easiest.  I’ve been making some bad calorie choices this week, like yesterday, I went over my limit by 300 calories.  The other bad side in my recovery has been my water intake.  I did great druing my week of training, but once that activity level lowered dramatically it was actually hard to get in my usual water.

Three weeks ago I challenged myself to lose 3 more pounds before Thanksgiving.  When that challenge started with a week of no weight loss I became worried.  Last week I lost only 1 pound, which is fantastic, but with all the activity I was kind of hoping for more.  This week comes along with a missed workout, extra calories and less water, I was expecting no gain.  I hung onto the fact that I measured myself this week (more on that later) and so I had other items to look at than what the scale says, love that.  Was I surprised to see a new zero enter my life? YES! With 2.7 pounds lost (24.3 since the beginning) I now weigh 140.8!!  My BMI is now 25.7!!!  OMG I was shocked, I actually weighed myself a 2nd time, but believe it because the scale gave me the same shocking news.  My goal was to lose 3 more pounds before Thanksgiving and I lost 3.8!!  And the good news does not stop there.  Last week I should have measured, but ran out of time, so Monday I measured. In the last month I’ve lost a little more than 1/4 inch off my waist and bust and a 1/2 inch off my upper arms, hips and finally my calfs!!!  I’ve lost 4 inches off my waist and hips since mid summer!!!  That feels good, really good.

This bit of incredible news is going to help me stay on track this weekend!!  I’m not making any new weight loss goals though.  I’d love to lose this next week.  I will keep up my water and workout schedule, I’ll continue to listen to the hunger scale, especially tomorrow…but I will be having a piece of my pumpkin pie and 1/2 slice of my mom’s apple pie.  It’s time to celebrate, not only my weight loss, but life.  I love my family and friends. I’m making good choices for me and my heart is all blown up and feeling good.

As if I needed another reason to be happy…in a few hours I will be seeing my brother-in-law from LA and tonight I’ll finally be seeing the new Twilight movie!!  Good good stuff.

I’ve very thankful for all of you that read my posts and have helped me on this journey.  I certainly could not have done it with out all of you!!!  Thank you and I mean you.  Have a happy wonderous week.

Random Thoughts Monday v11.0

I’m back, returned to life as I once knew it to be, but it’s different.  I am different.  The Nia White Belt Intensive was an experience and it HAS changed my life.  I’m continuing my studies in hopes that I can continue to learn and never forget the wonderful things I gained last week.  I’m sure I’ll be sharing some of those new learnings in my post and today you’ll find one indeed.

  • When your day is going as expected and then all of a sudden you are late, or you simply wake up late to start, what do you sense in your body?  I sense stress and tightening of muscles all over my body, especially in my chest.  My mood grows dark and my day suddenly becomes hard.  Suddenly those earrings take twice as long to put on or you have to reach and grab several times before you actually pick up that bag. What if when that stressful time appears you concentrated on relaxing those muscles that are playing against you?  What if you continued to move quickly but without the pressure?  Last week in class we experimented with walking fast, first for fun, second with stress and lastly with a mix of the two and a light bulb went on in my head.  Stress manifests its way in your body and mind many ways, but what if you let the stress in your body go, you know that ball of mess that forms right in your chest, your mind will then be free to help you fix your problem but you are not compounding it in your body and making it harder.  Your life is your lab, experiment away.
  • There are 5 teams in the NFL that have the same record as my Lions, there are only two with a better record.  Who do my Lions get to plan on their annual Thanksgiving day game?  The team with the perfect record, the Packers.  My Lions are going to fight, play hard and give it their all.  I will be cheering them on the whole way!!
  • I have not yet seen the latest Twilight movie, I’m still alive, but rest assured I do have plans to go with my dear husband and his brother (who will be flying in from LA for the holiday!!!) on Wednesday night.
  • Stephanie Plum!!!  OMG the next Plum #18 comes out tomorrow.  Yes I want something different in this book, but I also want a fun easy read.  I’ll let you know what I find.

I’m thankful every week for my life, my family and my friends, but this week is special because I will get to see so many members of my family.  It will be a busy week, lots of travel and ending with Christmas pictures at my parents house.  Did you know a week from Thursday is December 1st!!!  Oh boy, have a wonderful week and remember to work on your lab: don’t let stress leave your mind and attack your body and movements!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!….Go Lions, ROAR

Scale Day v20.0

I’ve been having so much fun at my Nia White Belt Intensive!!  Intensive is the truth!!  I’m on day 5  (2 days to go after today) and I’m exhausted…I’m also feeling excited, exhilarated.  Lots of emotions this week.  I’m learning a ton about my body, lots that I already knew, but never took the time to really understand, listen and sense.  Even if you don’t want to teach Nia, their White Belt Intensive is transformative.  I can already sense a change in myself, a change that has started slowly through my weight loss journey, but this week my awareness has been heightened.

My days have been long, up around 5am, get ready and travel for 1:15, dance, learn, dance, learn, lunch, dance, learn, dance, learn, travel for 1:15, hug my kids and put them in bed, prepare for the next day, sleep 6-7 hours, rise and repeat…exhaustion

I’ve been eating when I have time, snacking a little, getting all my water, but even with all the dancing my heart rate does not always get up into the weight loss zone.  I’d say I’m getting at least 60-120 minutes of good workout minutes in everyday.  But since all my meals are on the go I was not sure what the scale would say today.

Last week my weight did not change at all, but today, I’m down 1.1 pounds, nice!!! 2.9 pounds lost in the last four weeks, 21.6 pounds down overall and I am happy!!!

Right now I’m going to find myself some coffee and get back to class.  Have you pushed yourself lately?  Have you thought about how your workouts make you feel?  Do you feel better or worse after your workouts?  How do you feel hours before and hours after your workout?  Hmmm, get quiet, feel and listen to YOUR body

Random Thoughts Monday v10.0

I’m now completed two days in my Nia White Belt Intensive and I’m feeling stronger than ever before.  Have you ever been in that place where you are doing something that feels right for your body, your mind AND your spirit?  Well that is where I am right now.  I had an absolute blast today.  I’ve met eleven of the most amazing people from all over, Israel, Canada, North Carolina, Green Bay, Chicago and several from around Michigan.  We all come from different backgrounds but we all share one very important thing in common, we love movement.  Through Nia we are becoming fast friends and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.  Yes it will be awhile yet before I get to bed (I’m writing this post Sunday night;), my body is exhausted and I’ll be rising about 5am tomorrow, but I can’t wait, I can’t wait to learn the next bit of Nia.

  • A massage would feel great about now
  • My feet would love a good soaking
  • My back would love the hot pad
  • Aleve will be taken, by me, very soon
  • My Lions didn’t just lose today, they lost big time and my new Chicago friend had a little too much fun rubbing it in 😦
  • Have you ever listened to a piece of music and not moved your body, at all?  We’ve been listening with stillness these past two days in my Nia classes.  I’ve been at concerts where you sit and listen to music and it’s wonderful.  But I do know that I have never ever quieted my mind and body and simply listened.  Listened for the spaces between the beats, listened for an instrument to return to the party, listened for the full story of the music is a whole new experience.  Give it a try: relax your body, keep your mind alert and with your spirit waiting, just listen

Since my body is about to drop from all the dancing I did today I’m going to close up for today and go get some aleve and that hot pad, refill my giant water jug, lay out my clothes for tomorrow and rest my body

I hope you have a wonderful Monday and that you do something today for you.

The best Applesauce is your own

What you’ll need: Apples, Vanilla, Sugar, Cinnamon (optional), crock pot and/or stock pot(s), spatula, large spoon, food mill and a bowl it can sit on top of, an extra bowl and freezer storage containers

Here are my tips to making your own best Applesauce:

  1. Buy Apples 🙂 hardy har, I know, but this is the most important step, the combination of apples can make or break your sauce.  I seem to like the combination of mostly Red Delicious, Gala and Rome, but try out your own.  I’ve found with this combination I don’t need to add as much sugar in the end, again personal taste, but think about the sweetness of your apples and how sweet you like your sauce.
  2. Peal off any stickers on your apples, remove their stems and give them all a good washing
  3. Put the whole apples in your crock pot and or your biggest stock pot, don’t fill your pots too high, you’ll need to stir later
  4. Add enough water to cover the bottom of your pot, to help keep the apples from burning, place your lids on top and your pots on the heat
  5. Turn the heat to low or between a 3 and a 4 on the stove.
  6. Last thing you want is to burn your apples, low heat will help, but don’t forget to stir your apples.
  7. Keep stirring occasionally until your apples get mushy.  Depending on how many apples you have in the pot and the type of apples this step could take an hour to several hours.
  8. Once you have apple mush you can take your pot off the heat, but keep the lid on, you want your sauce still warm when you add the sugar.
  9. Grab a spatula, keep that big spoon you were using to stir your apples, a food mill and a bowl it can sit on top of, an extra bowl and freezer storage containers
  10. Place a couple of scoops of apple mush into your food mill and turn the crank.  Don’t forget to turn counter-clock-wise every now and then. Once you’ve gotten out all the sauce you can get, use the spatula to scrap the underside of the food mill and then scoop out the pulp into your extra bowl.
  11. Repeat the previous step until your bowl is full of sauce.
  12. Stir in vanilla and sugar to your liking, remember you can always add more, but you can’t take it out.  You can also add some cinnamon at this point too if you want.
  13. Once you’ve got your sauce doctored to your liking divide it into your freezer containers.  Do not add the lid to your containers until your sauce has cooled and then don’t forget to put your containers in the freezer.
  14. Repeat steps 10-13 until all your apple mush is officially your own best applesauce and all but one is in the freezer.
  15. Now go eat and enjoy some of the very best applesauce, your own
